Calpe’s Salt Lake is not only a beautiful landscape to visit. This area played a major role in the history of the region.
Throughout history, salt lakes were always under the ownership or management of kingdoms, principalities and duchies. Its operation was of great importance in the regional economy and the kingdom for many centuries.
However, the history of this salt lake has not always been a glorious one. From 1834 to 1917 approximately, the salt lakes were abandoned, and were a source of high malarial fevers caused by the abandonment situation they found themselves in.
The fate of this natural landscape changed when it was acquired by Vicente Buigues, whose society eradicated the health problems in the area.
Currently, you can enjoy the flora and fauna of this wetland of great ecological significance in the real arid zone where Calpe is located.
If you want to visit the salt marshes, we recommend you to stop by “Baños de la Reina” –Queen’s Baths- and “La Fossa“.
