Excavations in the Medieval Ifach Village

The Medieval Ifach Village in Calpe has made its way to be recognized as a Place of Cultural Interest.

The Medieval Ifach Village in Calpe is an area enclosed with walls, situated on the northern slopes of the Ifach Rock. The best preserved part of it is on Mirador de Levante.

Regional steps have been taken to include this enclosed area –Medieval Ifach Village- in the General Register of Places of Cultural Interest.

For that, an extensive technical study has been presented to the competent authorities, with data provided by Mr. Menéndez Fueyo, archaeologist and director of the excavations performed since 2004 in the IFACH Project site.

The enclosed area of the Medieval Village is located in the Penyal d’Ifac Nature Park, on soil unsuitable for urban construction. The walls run across about 4.2 hectares. The best preserved part is the Mirador del Levante, on the northern slope of the Ifach, with over 250 metres of walls with towers.

The walled village is part of the remarkable population endeavours made by the king Jaume I, who took inhabitants of the northern area of the peninsula as a development guarantee for this coastal area.

The municipality of Calpe is, without a doubt, the place to go for any history enthusiast. A lot of effort is being put in the recovery and maintenance of this site that constantly surprises us with new histories and which value increases as time passes by.
