Hermitage of San Juan de la Cometa

In the outskirts of Calpe, in the Tosa de la Cometa residential estate, you will find the Hermitage of San Juan de la Cometa, where every 24th June the fiestas of San Juan are celebrated.

There isn’t certainty about the year when this ancient fortified country house was built. The estimated building period is estimated to be the end of XVII century or beginnings of the XVII century.

The hermitage was built in honour of St. John Baptist. It is one of the best representations of the history of Calpe and its neighbouring areas; it is believed that people from these places used the edification as a chapel.

It follows a simple and austere design, rectangular with a saddle roof and a facade made of stone. It is built in two heights, with a bell tower and is kept in great shape.

In front of the hermitage, there are two arcades -known in Valencian architecture as riu-riaus-, three wells, a water reserve and a system for rain water collection.
